Press the back of your hand flat against the pavement and hold it there for seven seconds. If you cannot keep it there comfortably for the full seven seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws. Your dog has no way to tell you the ground is burning until the damage is already done.

Common questions

What pavement temperature is actually dangerous for dogs?

Around 125°F is the widely cited threshold at which skin can be destroyed by roughly sixty seconds of contact. Dog paw pads are tougher than human skin but they are not fireproof, and a dog crossing a parking lot easily spends more than a minute on the surface. Above 140°F, injury happens far faster than that. Treat 125°F as the line where you move to grass, and 140°F as the line where you do not walk on pavement at all.

Which is harder on a dog — Texas heat or Florida heat?

They injure dogs in different ways, and this is the single most useful thing to understand if you have moved between the two. Dallas is worse for paws: air temperatures routinely reach 100–105°F with clear skies and intense sun, pushing asphalt past 155°F. Tampa is worse for heat stress: air temperature rarely exceeds the mid-90s, but dew points above 75°F mean the heat index climbs past 105°F, and high humidity directly undermines panting, which is how a dog sheds heat. A Dallas owner should think first about surface temperature and walk routes. A Tampa owner should think first about duration, exertion, and humidity. This tool reports both readings separately so neither gets missed.

How do I know if my dog burned their paws?

Watch for limping or refusing to walk, licking or chewing at the feet, pads that look darker than usual or unusually red, visible blisters, or missing patches of pad surface. If you suspect a burn, move your dog to a cool surface, rinse the paws in cool — not ice — water, and call your veterinarian. Pad burns are painful, prone to infection, and frequently need professional treatment.

Is it safe to walk after sunset?

Usually, but not automatically. Asphalt absorbs heat all day and releases it slowly, so a street that reached 150°F at 3 PM can still sit well above air temperature at 8 PM. This matters more in Dallas, where the surface starts from a much higher afternoon peak. Early morning is the safest window in both metros: the surface has had all night to shed heat, and in Tampa the humidity load has not yet compounded. The checker above accounts for this retention, so evening readings will often be higher than air temperature alone would suggest.

Which dogs are most at risk?

Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds — French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers — are the highest-risk group, because panting is a dog's primary cooling mechanism and a shortened airway makes it far less effective. Senior dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, dogs with thick or dark coats, and any dog with heart or respiratory disease also carry elevated risk. Selecting those traits above tightens the tool's thresholds accordingly.

What are the warning signs of heatstroke in a dog?

Heavy or frantic panting, thick drooling, bright red gums, unsteadiness, vomiting or diarrhea, disorientation, and collapse. Heatstroke is a true emergency — move your dog into shade or air conditioning immediately, offer small amounts of cool water, wet the belly, armpits, and paws with cool water, and get to a veterinarian right away. Do not use ice or ice water, which constricts surface blood vessels and can actually slow cooling.

Does grass solve the problem?

It solves the paw-burn problem almost entirely — grass stays within a few degrees of air temperature because it transpires moisture and does not absorb solar energy the way asphalt does. It does not solve heat stress. A dog can still overheat on a shaded lawn if the air temperature and humidity are high enough, which is precisely why this tool reports paw safety and heat stress as two separate readings.
